Putting things in perspective
Written by Calum Ewing on Dec. 30th 2020
I can’t believe we have to do this again…

The thing I’ve found most challenging in 2020 is the false hope…

After a super-tough full lockdown last Spring, I honestly thought we’d got through the worst of it…

Things started to open up again…

We could get our hair cut…

We could travel around the country…

We could go out for food…

We could go and visit family and friends we hadn’t seen for ages…

Surely these are the first steps to getting back to normal, right?

Heck, I even managed to travel abroad for a week…

Cases were coming down, more people were getting tested, and vaccines were on the way…

There was light at the end of the tunnel…

And then, what seemed to be out of nowhere, we get the news that the virus has mutated, and it’s 70% more transmissible than the original virus…

Another lockdown on the horizon…

And at first, I felt distraught…

Shocked and desperate…

We’re gonna be trapped again!

And I’m not good at feeling trapped...

We’re gonna have to stop eating out!

We’re gonna be trapped inside our own country!

Back to square one...

We knew a lockdown was coming into effect at 00:01 on 26th December…

So we decided to go eat out, as we don’t know when it’ll next be possible…

And that’s when it dawned on me…

We hadn’t eaten out in 8 weeks…

Not by choice, we just hadn’t thought about it...

So how much is a 4-week lockdown REALLY going to affect our lives?

Yea sure, the gyms are closed, which is a bummer, but I quite enjoy a home workout…

And I’m pretty sure even the Costa Del Sol struggles to get above 15 degrees at this time of year, so even for a Scotsman, I’m not sure how fun sitting by the pool would be...

So what are we REALLY sacrificing?

In the wider scheme of things, not so much…

And what are we achieving?

Well, even if it helps save one person’s life, surely it’s worth it?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to be able to rewind/fast-forward to a simpler time…

But as I can’t (I’ve tried finding automation for it with no success… leave it with me...)
I feel it’s important to put things in perspective…

It’s natural to over-react to external circumstances… (that’s what I did)

So let that happen…

But once that’s happened...

Try to put things into perspective, look at things from a wider point of view, and appreciate what you DO have, and what you CAN control…

And try to stop worrying about things you can’t...

P.S. This is not a political post, and I don’t care what your thoughts are around COVID, as I can’t control them, so feel free to keep them to yourself. However, whatever your beliefs, try to look at the bigger picture.
